On IA, you will find a heavily edited and horribly grainy print of the 1924 film "Greed" (with Italian title cards). Whoever posted this film claimed it to be public domain but I have proof that it is NOT.

At the Library of Congress' copyright catalog, there is a listing for "Greed," by Metro-Goldwyn Pictures Corporation, registered on February 10, 1925 (in notice: 1924), and renewed on December 3, 1952, the day before the 28th anniversary of its first exhibition (December 4, 1924).

Seems like it's not PD to me.
